Performance Policies

Student performances are a very special part of the Enfield High School Instrumental Music Program.  They are the culmination of musical refinement, and the learning and efforts that take place during the rehearsal.  Performances offer the opportunity for the students to be enthusiastically recognized for their hard work and skills by their peers and the public.  In most regular classrooms, the student’s ability to perform, as well as the success of the overall class performance is usually not damaged by a single student absence.  In music ensembles, however, a single absence does impair the other students’ ability, morale and group reputation; this impact is unfair to others.  Balance, blend, group confidence, ensemble quality of sound, and technical success are harder to achieve in a performance that is missing one or more members.  Ensemble membership teaches planning and responsibility to others.  Work, lack of proper planning and avoidable conflicts are not excuses for not participating in a performance.  Given these aspects of performance it is the policy of this program that attendance at all performances is compulsoryOnly in case of emergency, such as a death in the family or illness are examples of acceptable excuses for missing a performance.  If other extenuating circumstances exist which may excuse a student from a performance, please contact the band director in writing at least two weeks prior to the performance.  The final decision as to whether the excuse is acceptable will be made by the Instrumental Music Director.

Rehearsal Policies

Attendance at all rehearsals is expected.  In the event of an emergency or illness that would cause absence from a rehearsal, in order to facilitate performance and organizational matters, the involved student will have his or her parents notify the director in writing or via the telephone with an explanation of the circumstances.  A calendar will be issued to all participating students and parents at the beginning of each semester.  Members are expected to plan their schedules so as to avoid conflicting dates.  Only unforeseen circumstances will a student be excused from a rehearsal.  If a student feels he or she has a valid reason for being absent from a scheduled event, written parental explanation must be given to the respective teacher at least one week prior to the date in question.
